Abstract: Coastal communities across the world face threats of erosion and flooding. Beaches and dunes provide protection against these hazards while also providing valuable ecosystem services and recreational functions. Increasingly, the importance of dunes for coastal protection is recognized and climate change adaptation solutions are being implemented to mimic natural dune systems.

AeoLiS is an open-source computer model that simulates wind-driven (aeolian) sand transport on the coast. It considers factors that limit the amount of sediment movement by the wind, such as soil moisture, grain size, and vegetation. The model is being developed to quantify sand transport and predict the evolution of Natural and Nature-Based Features (NNBF). A robust and fast AeoLiS model is a promising tool to inform the design of adaptation solutions that reduce coastal hazards. The international, trans-disciplinary team behind the development of AeoLiS will present on important processes considered in the model and state-of-the art model applications.
