Coastal Resilience in Wahkiakum County, WA

Field Trip Leads: Andrea Mah, Carrie Shofner, Sanpisa Sritrairat

Length: 1- hour

Meeting Location: 13 Vista Park Rd, Skamokawa Valley, WA 98647 (50-minute drive from The Loft in Astoria)

Join us for a guided visit to a local restoration site in Wahkiakum County to learn how community-driven, collaborative projects are helping address flooding, erosion, and other natural hazards while supporting habitat for fish and wildlife. This field trip will showcase a multi-year project on Nelson Creek which exemplifies how restoration can work to enhance habitat connectivity while addressing flooding and improving infrastructure. A project partner from Columbia Land Trust will share the process behind this collaborative effort with time for attendees to ask questions. Speakers Carrie Shofner (WSU Extension), Sanpisa Sritrairat (COHORT, Washington Sea Grant) and Andrea Mah (Cascadia CoPes Hub, OSU) will also discuss the ways that the Wahkiakum Common Ground team is using community workshops to build the strong network of leaders and citizens necessary to accomplish multi-benefit adaptation and mitigation work.

Measuring flooding in the Lower Willapa River

Field Trip Leads: Alex Horner-Devine and Ian Miller

Meeting Location: Elixir Coffee Shop / World’s Largest Oyster

1015 Robert Bush Drive East, South Bend, WA 98586 (50-minute drive from The Loft in Astoria)

Approximate length: 2 Hours

The communities of Raymond, Willapa and South Bend WA experience chronic flooding from the Willapa River and the coast, and are in the process of evaluating adaptation strategies to address future flood risks. To complement this effort we have distributed sensors in more than 20 locations throughout the river and in the floodplain communities to diagnose the processes contributing to flooding. On this field trip we will visit flood hotspots in the community and discuss strategies that the community is considering to address them. We will also visit key measurement locations and describe what we have learned so far this winter about flooding in the Lower Willapa River.
